RDCLSSC Programs follow the Speed Skating Canada Long Term Participant/Athlete Development Model (LTPAD). For more detailed information, see Skater Development.
The Head Coach, with information provided by the Club Registrar, place skaters in Groups based on their ability and age. Returning Skaters will always start the season in their Group from the previous season until their development can be assessed by the Coach.
New Skaters and younger skaters in the SSC FUNDamental and Learning to Train categories are placed in Group 1 and evaluated for ability throughout the season. Group 1 skaters have the option of skating 1 or 2 nights a week.
Group 2 is for older (normally ages 11-12+) and more advanced skaters (developmentally able to skate with Group 2) whose focus is training for competition (Train to Train through Junior). Group 2 Skaters normally skate 2 nights a week and, in some seasons, have the option of skating 3 nights a week (for more advanced skaters in Group 3). Group 2 Skaters also engage in dryland and cross-training for general fitness and endurance training.
The following table gives start times for each program and the general dates for Short Track and Long Track. Please note that these dates will be confirmed each year as we learn our starting ice date and, for Outdoor Long Track, are weather dependent.
